Sephora Play! Box Review
Today when the mailman came in holding a medium sized black and white striped box I could tell the rest of my day would be just a little bit brighter. “What’s in there, anyway,” he asked, as I squealed with delight and grabbed the box as soon as he put it down.
As casually as I could manage I replied, “makeup and stuff.” But this box, my first Sephora Play! Box, is more to me than just ‘makeup and stuff’. As a makeup junkie this is my monthly fix, or one of them, I should say. And I am so excited to be reviewing it here for everyone!
The Play! Box is a Sephora monthly beauty box subscription. It costs $10 and is tailored to your likes and preferences based on a quiz during registration. It is sent out mid-month at which time the product list becomes available online in your Sephora account. Similar to the Ipsy Glam bag, this box includes 5 products of sample and deluxe sample size plus a bonus perfume sample in every order.
The box comes with a pamphlet outlining all the products inside and if you scan the barcode on the products using the Sephora app it can take you directly to the product page delivering full product details. Finally, inside there is also a little card called the Play Pass which gives you in-store perks like a free consultation and tutorial or extra beauty insider points.
To establish a format, each month when I receive my box I will create the initial post outlining the shipping date, delivery date, product list and my first impressions prior to using anything. Next I will test out the products before I receive the next month’s box and update the post with my final thoughts on what I received and how it performed.
I initially signed up for the Play! Box in late September, around the 28th. I did see online that they were sold out or that people were on a waiting list at some point but I did not have that issue. On October 14th I received a shipping notification and as soon as Tuesday afternoon, October 18th I had received my box.
This month’s sack had a cute, “Lipstix & Chill” design on it. Inside the bag there were 5 sample size products plus a perfume sample.
Product Outline:
-FARMACY SKIN DEW
-MADAME C.J. WALKER BEAUTY CULTURE SCENT & SHINE COCONUT OIL
-T.L.C. FRAMBOOS GLYCOLIC NIGHT SERUM
-THE ESTEE EDIT FLASH PHOTO GLOSS
-SMASHBOX ALWAYS ON MATTE LIQUID LIPSTICK in DRIVER’S SEAT
-DEREK LAM 10 CROSBY SILENT ST. EAU DE PARFUM
I was pretty excited to receive the skin dew and the night serum. I have really been wanting a small/travel size toner and/or setting spray so this was perfect! And I love skin care treatments that can possibly battle my issues with hyperpigmentation—can’t wait to try. The coconut oil will definitely be useful for keeping my hair hydrated as it transitions between curly and straight, especially in the cold and drying weather.
As for the other products, I did swatch the lipstick on my hand and it has a rich, creamy texture which I was into but it did take a while to dry down and smudged in that time. Also for me personally the color is not flattering. The gloss is a cool idea. I could see it working well for photography but I am not sure how useful it would be for me as I tend to prefer reflective colored glosses or matte lipsticks.
The perfume smells lightly floral but not sweet, with a hint of woodiness and baby powder and light fresh notes at the end.
Overall I feel like my $10 went a long way and I am excited and pleased with this month’s products. Keep checking back for review updates!
Also I just signed up for Sol Theory which is a beauty and accessories subscription service. I love how it is so customizable and I am looking forward to seeing which sunnies I get in my first box. If you would like to try it out use my code TAYLORBIRD for a good % off!
