It’s favorites season on YouTube for many beauty vloggers and “gurus.” I was feeling inspired by NikkieTutorials, Jackie Aina and Amanda Ensing, some of the ladies I subscribe to, to think up my own favorites list for last year. Including but not limited to beauty products and in no particular order here’s what I couldn’t put down in 2015.
Y’all. I have literally been wearing this foundation since I started wearing foundation. Even though I have tested out many others, this is one that I always come back to. Unfortunately this foundation oxidizes. With that said, I typically make a blend of products for foundation, adding in either the CoverFX Custom Cover Drops or the Lush Colour Supplements. So if I use the right primer, powder and concealer I don’t see a lot of color change happening. My go to color is 400 Caramel, not to be confused with Golden Caramel. My body color changes a lot throughout the year but my neck is black AF and never really lightens up and this is the only foundation I have ever found that blends to my body color perfectly. I rediscovered this as my favorite foundation during Indian summer here in the Bay last year. Despite all my perspiration this foundation stayed put. Then Revlon went and changed up the game by adding a pump! Yes, is all I have to say.
Fun Fact: my Colour Pop Liquid Lipstick Review blog post receives the most traffic of any other post I have ever published. And it’s a constant thing. Sometimes more than 50 reads a day! Are you guys trying to tell me something? 🙂 And it is probably no secret that, oh I don’t know, ten lipstick purchases later I love these ultra mattes! I love that they are affordable but more than that it is just my preferred formula of liquid lipsticks. With the exception of Succulent, the formulation and pigmentation is spot on. The wear time is fantastic, 8+ hours in the right conditions. They offer a wide variety of shades including funky colors like green and blue. Plus the packaging is sleek and user friendly. If I had to narrow down which shades I wear the most it would probably be:
Chilly Chili, a warm toned brown that appears nude on me, because it is comfortable on the lips and very easy to wear for my skin tone.
LAX, a burgundy/oxblood shade, because it is one of the most comfortable of their ultra mattes and it makes me feel like I have Kylie Jenner sized lips (also it was perfect for fall).
Beeper, because it is basically a dupe for Bow N Arrow from Kat Von D. and a great pinky nude for brown girls.
-Colour Pop Super Shock Shadow in Bandit
In addition to their lipsticks there is one eyeshadow in particular that I probably wore more than half of the days last year and that is the shade Bandit. I believe I have talked about it on my blog before. I had a somewhat difficult time finding that warm brown color everyone was obsessed with wearing in the crease (think MAC, Uninterrupted) that translated well on brown skin. Enter Bandit, an eyeshadow hero. This one would be beautiful on all skin tones, even darker skin than mine. If you, like I was, are struggling with FOMO for the warm brown eyeshadow, get you some Bandit baby girl.
Speaking of eyeshadows, another one that I just could not stop using in 2015 was a color from NYX called Day Club. Here’s a twist–I was using it as my glow! This color is basically rose gold without that gold intensity, like a fledgling version of Becca’s Rose Gold. If you like a more understated highlight that still looks glowy without making you feel like a disco ball and you have a medium-deep skin color, this would look very beautiful on you.
Remember Bandit? That eyeshadow I was just going on about? Well, this is what I’ve been using to apply it. It appears to have natural hair but since it is only $1 I am guessing probably not. And to be fair, it can shed a tiny bit. But since I literally only use this brush to apply Bandit I don’t have a problem with it. Some of you may have tried the super shock shadows and noticed that the formula is a bit different, and it can be challenging to find an application that works with their formula properly. If you can find this brush at your local Target I would suggest picking it up, but keep in mind that it’s really only good for blending purposes.
About a year ago today I purchased a generic set of makeup brushes on Amazon. Mostly because I am too lazy to wash mine every week like I should and I thought it might come in handy to have a backup set.
Holy guacamole, I loved these!
They shed once in awhile but I don’t take the best care of them. Other than that, I have had no problems with them. They are fluffy and soft, blend product quite easily and a whole set of five face brushes and five eye brushes was less than $15 including tax and shipping. I know some are very particular about the brushes that they use, and I am particular about the ones I use on clients, but for myself I just need something that gets the job done. If you’re like me these are a great option.
Scent is the closest sense linked to memory. The perfumes and colognes my loved ones wear have always had a profound effect on me especially those of my mother and grandmother. In my child mind wearing perfume made you into a lady, and having a signature scent was even more glamorous. I would sometimes watch my grandmother get dressed for work in the mornings and even though our preference for fragrances couldn’t be further from each other, the way the smell of her perfume would follow her around the house always struck me. When I smelled Nirvana White for the first time it took me back to that place of being a little girl and being so excited for the day that I would finally become a woman and have a signature scent of my own. And I think I’ve found it in this perfume. It is floral without being too strong, light and fresh but still feminine…I love it.
If you follow my blog you know that I attended the Priscilla Ono makeup course over the summer. While I’ve now come to realize that the cost of the class wasn’t exactly worth the content, that doesn’t take away from the experience. With that said, this brush cleaner is one of the few items I discovered during the course and I am absolutely in love with it.
It has a pleasant but mysterious smell. It is described as vanilla on their website and is somewhat reminiscent of a MAC lipstick but you can also smell how cleansing it is as well. This stuff, no joke, is friggin amazing. Something you should know about me–I’m super lazy about cleaning my brushes. This makes it quick as a snap. You simply splash a little product into a shallow dish or cup, swirl your brushes around in the liquid until you see the makeup residue fully absorb the liquid, then squeeze out any excess and wipe off on a napkin or towel. Depending on the makeup that has collected in your brush you might need to repeat a couple times until there is no makeup wiping off in the drying process. My favorite thing about this? Dry time is virtually non-existent, I’d say 5 minutes maximum. The cleaner your brush is to begin with, the faster the brush will dry. In some cases I can use my clean brush immediately. If you’re considering purchasing this do yourself a favor and get a big bottle. Trust me, you’ll use it and it’s worth every penny.
I will preface this by saying that I don’t really wear any eye makeup that is waterproof. I have sensitive eyelids and I hate the consistency of waterproof mascara, so I can’t accurately say how well this remover works on waterproof products. However, I have come to love this for removing eye makeup in general, especially anything black (think Inglot gel liner #77). It really melts makeup off but doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry and uncomfortable. The tube is a decent size, with a little over 4 ounces and it costs less than $11 USD. If you’re in the market for a new makeup remover I would say definitely try this one.
Ultrabland is marketed as a facial cleanser but works in a multitude of ways. The rich, buttery but gentle consistency is like a thick liquid lint roller, picking up dirt and makeup in its tracks. As almond oil is the first ingredient in this product, Ultrabland is actually contributing vitamin E to your skin while you cleanse. Just take a nickel sized amount on cloth or wipe, rub into the skin and that’s it! Once you no longer feel that oily residue you’re done. This product truly melts off makeup and makes getting ready for bed a low-energy experience, as it should be.
Hi, yes, I’m 5 years old (+ 19) and it is appropriate for me to wear onesies. Footsie pajamas are making a comeback in a big way. They even sell them at Forever21! In my collection I only have about six but I am hoping to find more this year. If you are one of those people that gets hot at night try a romper–just as fun without all the fuss.
-The Color BLACK
I have to say, I have never been big on the color black. I prefer to wear lighter colors, like white, pink and yellow. But since Lush has a black and white only dress code for the staff, and white tends to get dirty very easily there, the black items in my wardrobe have more than doubled. And I’ve grown to have an appreciation for the color that I never had before. I think anything black or black and white printed instantly elevates a look to a more chic appearance. And I also dyed my hair black in 2016, after previously having it a multitude of colors. I wouldn’t quite say 2015 was a black year but black truly will never go out of style.
I think Snapchat made a huge splash when they came out with the cool effects and filters. I had previously used the app before, but my use of it really exploded when I was able to send funny videos and pictures to my friends. I can’t wait to see what new things they add to Snapchat in 2016.
I can’t tell you how much deep dish Zach’s pizza I ate in 2015 but I can tell you it was surely a lot. I am lactose intolerant and I have recently been attempting a vegan lifestyle, but when you see the thick rim of crust circling a bubbling pool of tomato-y goodness concealing an inferno of melted cheese, spicy peppers, aromatic herbs on top of a buttery, salty layer of crust…you are but a helpless lamb in a den of lions. Yes, the sauce, not cheese, tops the pizza. Revolutionary I tell you! And I pity the fool who doesn’t live near a Zachary’s Pizza!
Sidenote: I’m about to go get some right now. So much for being vegan! I’ll try again tomorrow.
Finally I just want to appreciate everyone for reading this far, tolerating my nonsense and hopefully enjoying some of it. I love writing my blog. It is a great creative outlet for me. Even if no one read it I think I would keep doing it. But when I can help someone choose the right lipstick shade or give them tips on a diet technique, it really makes me feel like the effort I put in to writing these posts and delivering accurate and entertaining information is worth it. Thank you all once again. Here’s to more growth and success this year!
